The Beta Pi chapter has a long standing tradition of community service with the Washington State Department of Transportation Adopt-a-Highway program, having contracted with them since 1999 to clean up a 2 mile stretch of Hwy 195 just outside of Pullman, WA. We encourage our pledges and brothers to get involved within the Pullman community and to give back whenever possible. This opportunity allowed 29 pledges to work alongside 2 brothers to clean up litter that accumulated on the side of the road. We had hoped to get more brothers involved; however due to safety concerns, we had to restrict the number of people out on the road. We went out 4 times – cleaning a one mile stretch each time – filling up about 60 bags of trash. Thanks to our pledges, not only is our highway free of litter but it is now safe for the local wildlife and the environment.
