Every year more than 1600 Canadians are
added to organ wait lists. So many of them don't live long enough for an organ
to become available. Studies have shown that over 90% of Canadians believe in
organ donation, but only 25% of them have actually made the plans to donate.
This fall, our pledges came together and organized an organ donation awareness
week. As a health science based fraternity, we decided that we wanted to do
something more than raise money for a charity; we wanted to donate and save
lives.
We
know that organ donation is an idea that is still new to some people. Maybe
they find the idea shocking or maybe even repulsive. Our project not only aimed
to get sign-ups but also to plant the idea that death can save lives. Over the
course of one week we shed some light on the topic, recruited over 25 students
and staff in our faculty, and hopefully enticed some future donors. Hopefully
in the years to come our pledge project will save a life!
